Tips on conserving energy from Columbia Gas

  • In the fall, have your central heating/cooling system checked out by a professional.
  • Clean or replace the filter in your forced-air heating system regularly during the heating season.
  • Set your thermostat as low as possible in the winter. Often, 68-70 degrees Fahrenheit is recommended as a comfortable and energy efficient indoor temperature. However, some older or ailing people may require higher indoor temperatures at all times.
  • Consider the advantages of using a clock thermostat for your heating system. You program it to automatically turn down the heat at night while you're sleeping.
  • Dust or vacuum vents frequently to ensure free flow of heat.
  • Use kitchen and bath vent fans sparingly in cool months, since they can blow away warm air quickly.
  • Stop drafts under doors by using draft stoppers. Rooms will stay nice and warm in cooler months.
  • Think about installing ceiling fans with reversible motors. In winter, ceiling fans push warm air that collects near a high ceiling, around and back down again. In the summer, they help circulate cooler air around the room as well.
  • Have your gas water heater professionally checked at least once every 10 years to keep it performing efficiently.
  • Wrap your water heater with an insulated water heater blanket to save money.
  • Installing a low-flow shower head can save up to 50% of the hot water normally used during a shower.

There are numerous other things you can do today, next week and year-round to lower heating costs.
